The Lippe region consists primarily of territory under sole Lippian sovereignty at any time between between 1528 and 1646. To be clear, the condominium of Schwalenberg and the village of Hagedorn in the condominium of Stoppelberg are included under that definition, but the condominia of Oldenburg and Lippstadt are not. Also included is the nearby former County of Spiegelberg, which was never under Lippian sovereignty, but is included to simplify the explanation of the County of Lippe-Spiegelberg-Pyrmont.
For most of the Lippe region, I account for all countries and subdivisions between 1528, when Lippe was raised to a county, and 1851, when the reign of Prince Leopold II ended. (The County/Principality of Lippe was never conquered by France, nor was it ever placed into a Napoleonic client state, so I can go past 1806 without tackling the issues that those events raise.) For Spiegelberg and Pyrmont, I cover the years between 1494, when the two counties were first united, and 1806/7 when the Holy Roman Empire ended and they were incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia (a Napoleonic client state).
