Samtamt/Amt Schwalenberg

Samtamt Oldenburg

Samtamt Stoppelberg

In contrast to other subdivisions, Schwalenberg, Oldenburg, and Stoppelberg were each referred to as a “Samtamt” because administrative responsibility was a collective (samt) effort between a Lippian entity and the Bishopric of Paderborn. The identity of the Lippian entity changed frequently in the 16th and 17th centuries.

  • Between 1558 and 1583, it was the subordinate County of Lippe-Spiegelberg-Pyrmont;
  • Between 1613 and 1620, it was the subordinate County of Lippe-Schwalenberg;
  • Between 1667 and 1762, it was the subordinate County of Lippe-Biesterfeld.

At all other times prior to 1802, the Lippian entity was the core County/Principality of Lippe(-Detmold).

Although administrative responsibilities were shared between the two countries, sovereignty was not. Prior to 1802, Lippe(-Detmold) was sovereign in Schwalenberg and Paderborn was sovereign in Oldenburg. Each was sovereign over one of the two villages in Stoppelberg—Lippe(-Detmold) in Hagedorn and Paderborn in Rolfzen.

In 1802, shared administration came to an end. Schwalenberg became a normal Amt in the Principality of Lippe. Oldenburg and Stoppelberg became part of the Principality of Paderborn and were incorporated into the Oberwaldischer Kreis.
