Grafschaft Oldenburg
“Grafschaft Oldenburg” is simply the German rendition of “County of Oldenburg”. During the period when the county was its own country, I render its name in English. During the period when Oldenburg was a duchy, however, it is expedient to distinguish the former counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst from one another. Hence, I created a higher-level subdivision for each and, like all other subdivisions, rendered their names in German—in this case, “Grafschaft.” All of Grafschaft Delmenhorst is covered on a single page. Grafschaft Oldenburg was much larger and is covered on multiple pages, as follows:
- Stadt Oldenburg
- Landvogtei Oldenburg, Geestvogteien
- Landvogtei Oldenburg, Marschvogteien
- Landvogtei Neuenburg, Amt Apen
- Landvogtei Neuenburg, Amt Neuenburg
- Landvogtei Neuenburg, Vogtei Zwischenahn
- Landvogtei Neuenburg, Amt Rastede
- Landvogtei Neuenburg, Vogtei Jade
- Landvogtei Ovelgönne
- Amt Schwei
- Amt Land Wührden
Some sources place Amt Varel in the Grafschaft, but because it was still administered by Kniphausen, I do not follow that convention.
