Oldenburger Marschvogteien

The Oldenburger Marschvogteien were focused on the west bank of the Weser River between the towns of Elsfleth (in Vogtei Moorriem, settled perhaps as early as the 9th century) and Brake (in Vogtei Hammelwarden, the Harrien section of which was probably settled in the 12th century). The other two Vogteien were a bit further west of the river. Much of the land in these Vogteien was the result of dikes built by the Archbishops of Bremen in the 12th century and by the Counts of Oldenburg in the 15th century.

 

The Vogteien were initially considered “special,” meaning they were not associated with any Amt. However, during the local government reform instituted by Denmark in 1699, the Vogteien were retained but placed under Landvogtei Oldenburg. The following lists cover the period between 1529 and 1699, but remain valid between 1699 and 1811 with the caveat that they were under Landvogtei Oldenburg during the latter period.
