Vogtei/Amt Schwei

Schwei was the site of a farm operated by the Hude monastery. A church was built there in 1525. Schwei was in Oldenburg territory, but Hude was in Delmenhorst territory. To preempt any Delmenhorst claim, the Count of Oldenburg confiscated the farm in 1528 and established a Vogtei.

In 1669, the Vogtei, which, as part of Oldenburg, had come under Danish sovereignty in 1667, was traded to the Count of Aldenburg—an illegitimate son of the Count of Oldenburg who had become sovereign over the Lordship of Kniphausen—in exchange for several estates scattered throughout Oldenburg. In 1680, however, the Count of Aldenburg died and Denmark occupied all of his lands that had been under Oldenburg sovereignty prior to 1667. In a 1693 treaty, the Count’s son surrendered sovereignty over Vogtei Schwei to Denmark, which recharacterized it as an Amtsgericht. It appears to have been unaffected by the local government reform instituted by Denmark in 1669.
