Unified Ottonian Countries

This page covers the countries under which all Ottonian Nassuvian lands were unified in a single country—one created upon the initial partition of Nassuvian lands between the Ottonian and Walramian lines (not covered by the database), one the result of a 1561 reunification (repartitioned in 1607), and one the result of a 1743 reunification that lasted until the end of the Holy Roman Empire. The fragments that were reunited are recognized as Landesteile of the unified countries.

County of Nassau-Dillenburg

(1) I omit “Nassau-” from the simplified name because it is redundant with the nation name. All countries with simplified names beginning with “Dillenburg” should be understood to belong to the Ottonian line.

Principality of Orange-Nassau

(2) Adopting the Orange-Nassau name in 1743 is somewhat arbitrary. The Prince inherited Orange in 1702, but there was no official date of transition between the names “Nassau-Dillenburg-Diez” and “Orange-Nassau”. 1743 is a convenient date because it marks the reunification of Ottonian lands in a single country.

(3) Nassau-Dillenburg-Diez had already absorbed territory from Beilstein, Hadamar, and Siegen (Calvinist line). The Dillenburg had died out in 1739, but Diez did not assert control until the last competing line—the Catholic Siegen line—had died out.
