The Hamburg Region consists of the following as of 1640:
- the Imperial City of Hamburg, including Cuxhaven and its surroundings;
- the Imperial City of Bremen;
- the Principality of Lüneburg-Harburg;
- the Peasant Republic of Hadeln;
- several privately-held islands on the Elbe River between Hamburg and Harburg; and
- a handful of exclaves of Holstein, Lauenburg, and Oldenburg.
For each of those components of the region, the span of years covered by the database differs as follows:
- Hamburg: 1529, when the city became Protestant, until 1806;
- Bremen: 1562, when the city became Calvinist, until 1803;
- Harburg: 1527, when Harburg was spun off from Lüneburg-Celle, until 1803; and
- Hadeln: 1543, when the Hadeler law was codified, until 1801.
