Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst
Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg
Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst-Mühlingen
The Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst was one of four principalities created when Anhalt was partitioned in 1606. Like the other three, it was part of Ascanian Germany. After its creation, Anhalt-Zerbst acquired the Ämter of Dornburg (in 1667), and Mühlingen (in 1669). Both were temporarily spun off as subordinate principalities—Dornburg between 1685 and 1742, and Mühlingen between 1685 and 1714. The Zerbst ruling family died out in 1793 and in 1797, its Anhalt territory was distributed among the remaining principalities. You can find where an Amt was assigned by selecting that Amt from the list below.
In the mid-17th century, Anhalt-Zerbst assumed sovereignty and/or administrative responsibility over certain territories outside of the Anhalt region. They are cataloged on a separate page.
