Duchy of Saxe-Weißenfels (adm. Anhalt-Zerbst)

Electorate of Saxony (adm. Anhalt-Zerbst)

Lordship of Jever (in personal union with Anhalt-Zerbst)

In 1659, Anhalt-Zerbst came into possession of the adjacent Amt Walternienburg, which remained under the sovereignty of the Duchy of Saxe-Weißenfels. When the Weißenfels line died out in 1746, sovereignty reverted to the Electorate of Saxony. To reflect the split between sovereignty and administration, I render the simplified country name as Saxe-Weißenfels-Zerbst or Saxony-Zerbst as appropriate.

In 1667, the Prince of Zerbst inherited the Lordship of Jever on the North Sea coast. Control over the territory was contested by Denmark (with the aid of France) until 1689, when Zerbst control was formalized. I treat this as a personal union and render the simplified country name as Jever-Zerbst to avoid any association with the rest of Anhalt.

When the Zerbst ruling family died out in 1793, Anhalt-Dessau took over the administration of Amt Walternienburg. Jever was awarded to the nearest Zerbst relative—Catherine the Great of Russia, who descended from the Dornburg line.
