Lübeck exclaves in Lauenburg

The Imperial City of Lübeck included a number of exclaves, many of which were surrounded by Lauenburg territory. The exclaves in Lauenburg included Stadt Mölln, and three Ämter (Ritzerau, Behlendorf, and Woltersdorf). Furthermore, several adlige Güter, which I group together as the “Lübsche Güter”, were owned by citizens or institutions of Lübeck. (The territory surrounding the Güter—Amt Steinhorst—belonged to Holstein-Gottorp until 1739, but attempts by Gottorp to assert sovereignty over the Güter were unsuccessful, with the exception of Schenkenburg in 1568. Therefore, I recognize the Güter as fully belonging to Lübeck.) Mölln reverted to Lauenburg in 1683, but sovereignty over the remaining exclaves was often under dispute, so in 1747 a formal division was enacted. The disposition of the territory was as follows:

  • Amt Behlendorf and half of Amt Ritzerau remained as Ämter under Lübeck sovereignty.
  • The other half of Ritzerau fell under Lauenburg sovereignty, where it was distributed among Ämter as follows:
    • The previously imperial portions of Duvensee and Siebenbäumen were united with the ducal portions of those villages in Amt Steinhorst, and
    • Klein Berkenthin, Koberg, Niendorf, and Sirksfelde were assigned to the new Amtsvogtei Mölln of Amt Ratzeberg.
  • Amt Woltersdorf was distributed as follows:
    • Tramm remained under Lübeck sovereignty, but was transferred to Amt Ritzerau, and
    • The remaining villages fell under Lauenburg sovereignty and were assigned to the new Amtsvogtei Mölln of Amt Ratzeberg.
  • The Lübsche Güter were distributed as follows:
    • Sovereignty over Gut Krummesse was awarded to Lübeck, where it became an Amt. (The neighboring village of Krummesse, part of Amt Ratzeburg, was unaffected by the deal.)
    • The remaining Güter fell under Lauenburg sovereignty, where I reassign them to the Lauenburg quasi-Güterdistrikt. (Formal Güterdistrikte were only a thing in neighboring Holstein.)

The lists below cover only the period under Lübeck sovereignty.
