Lordship of Bassenheim

 

This page covers two closely-related countries for which I use the same name. From 1337 until 1477, there was only one country—the geographic Lordship of Bassenheim. In 1477, however, the Lord of Bassenheim began accumulating sovereign interests in territories unrelated to the core lordship. At that point, it became a “lineage-based country”—a kind of umbrella to cover all of the Lord’s possessions. In 1554, the lineage-based country was partitioned into three entities, each of which has its own page. From then on, this page covers only the geographic lordship, which was assigned to one of those entities.

 

Technically, the original lineage-based country was called the “Lordship of Waldbott von Bassenheim”. I use that name here to distinguish it from the geographic lordship. On other pages, however (and, after the partition, on this page), I drop the “Waldbott von” from the names of the lineage-based countries to save space. Because the database begins in 1554, when the original lineage-based country terminates, there is no overlap in the database between the two countries described on this page.

(1) No date for the transfer of Merl to Bassenheimian administration can be documented. I use 1530 (before the partition of Bassenheim) when the Drachenfels line went extinct. The next candidate date would be 1622, when Myllendonk, the successor to Drachenfels, went extinct.
