This page covers periods during which Herrschaft Drachenfels and Amt Wolkenburg were administered by dynasties that I have deemed “minor”, while under the sovereignty of the Electorate of Cologne. Other Herrschaften were administered by those same dynasties and they are included here as well. Information that only applies prior to the period covered by the database is shown in italics.

  • 1402: Drachenfels acquires administrative right over Herrschaft Merl
  • 1425: Drachenfels acquires administrative rights over Amt Wolkenburg
  • 1509: Drachenfels surrenders 50 percent of administrative rights over Wolkenburg to Bassenheim
  • 1530: Prospective quasi-country terminated upon the extinction of the Drachenfels line

(1) This does not actually meet the definition of a quasi-country because the Drachefels family were not foreigners but subjects of the Electorate. Nevertheless, treating it as a prospective quasi-country is useful for showing the development of the territory. Doing so has no impact whatsoever on the content of the database.

  • 1530: Prosepctive quasi-country converted to true quasi-country when the sovereign Myllendonk line inherits full administrative rights over Drachenfels and 50% of administrative rights over Wolkenburg upon the extinction of the Drachenfels ruling line
  • 1554: Bassenheim share of Wolkenburg transferred to Bassenheim-Gudenau upon partition/beginning of database
  • 1622: Quasi-country terminated upon the extinction of the ruling Myllendonk line

(2) The 1622 date is approximate. I use it because I know Myllendonk was involved after 1530 and its ruling line went extinct in 1622. However, Gudenau disputed Myllendonk’s claim and Myllendonk may have surrendered its claim to the more proximate Abbey earlier than 1622 rather than defend its claim at a distance.
