Gericht Winnen-Höhn

Amt Stuhlgebiet

Amt Rennerod

Gericht Winnen-Höhn, consisting of the parishes of Willmenrod, Rotenhain, Höhn, Neustadt, and Rennerod had been established by the 14th century as part of the County of Dietz. When Dietz was partitioned between Nassau and Trier in 1564, Winnen-Höhn was awarded to Ottonian Nassau.

When the Ottonian lands were partitioned in 1607, most of Winnen-Höhn joined the County of Nassau-Beilstein (the Willmenrod parish and the village WInnen left the possession of Nassau) where it became Amt Stuhlgebiet. In 1620, the Beilstein line died out and Amt Stuhlgebiet was awarded to the County of Nassau-Hadamar.

The Hadamar line died out in 1711 and its lands were redistributed six years later. Amt Stuhlgebiet was assigned to the County of Dietz and was enhanced by the parish of Elsoff. For one year, beginning in 1742, all formerly Hadamar territory held by Dietz, including Amt Stuhlgebiet, was traded to the Catholic County of Siegen. However, all of that territory reverted to Dietz when the Siegen count died in 1743, thereby creating a unified Ottonian county.

The following year, Amt Stuhlgebiet was abolished, as all former Hadamar lands were administered as a single unit. That lasted until 1775, when Ämter were again created. Amt Rennerod emerged at that time, consisting of the same territory as Amt Stuhlgebiet. In 1782, the parishes of Rotenhain and Höhn were transferred to the new Amt Marienberg in Landesteil Dietz, and the Elsoff parish was assigned to Amt Ellar-Mengerskirchen, still in Landesteil Hadamar. To compensate, the parishes of Liebenscheid, Neukirch, and Emmerichenhain were transferred from Amt Beilstein in Landesteil Dietz to Amt Rennerod.

Except for Seck and the four villages in the Elsoff parish, the villages listed above in Amt Stuhlgebiet should be understood to have belonged to Gericht Winnen-Höhn prior to 1607 and to Amt Rennerod between 1775 and 1782. Seck belonged to the County of Wied-Runkel prior to 1637 and its status was disputed after the Hadamar line died out in 1711. After a financial settlement in 1788, jurisdiction was awarded to Orange-Nassau. I treat the Nassau claim as valid throughout.
