County of Bentheim-Tecklenburg/Hohenlimburg

 

This page covers the lineage-based country of Bentheim-Tecklenburg. Its core territory consisted of Tecklenburg and Rheda, which I treat as distinct geographic entities. It also acquired administrative rights to territory under the sovereignty of more distant countries. No places have been assigned to this country, so I give it no simplified name. Instead, prior to 1696, I append “Tecklenburg” to the simplified names of the core geographic countries and others with which it was in personal union and of quasi-countries over which it had administrative rights. In 1696, sovereignty over Tecklenburg proper (but not Rheda) was awarded to Solms-Braunfels by an imperial court. Thereafter, I append “Hohenlimburg” (the name of the highest-ranking sovereign territory still held by the lineage-based country) wherever “Tecklenburg” had been appended before.

    • 1610: Created upon partition of Bentheim & Steinfurt with sovereignty over Tecklenburg (with Rheda) and administrative rights over Erbvogtei (an Unterherrschaft of the Electorate of Cologne) and the Ämter of Freudenberg and Uchte (subdivisions of Hesse-Kassel)
    • 1623: Surrenders administrative rights over Erbvogtei to Bentheim & Steinfurt
    • 1629: Inherits sovereignty over Hohenlimburg upon the extinction of the Alpen line
    • 1632: Reacquires administrative rights over Erbvogtei and also acquires administrative rights over Alpen, Helpenstein, and Wevelinghoven (all Unterherrschaften of the Electorate of Cologne) from Bentheim & Steinfurt upon the resolution of the Alpen inheritance
    • 1638: Acquires administrative rights of Gronau from Bentheim & Steinfurt
    • 1696: Renamed as Bentheim-Hohenlimburg upon the awarding of Tecklenburg (but not Rheda) to Solms-Braunfels by an Imperial court (1)
    • 1699: Surrenders administrative rights over Gronau to the Bishopric of Münster
    • 1700: Surrenders administrative rights over Freudenberg and Uchte to Hesse-Kassel
