Reifferscheidian Germany

The Lordship of Reifferscheid emerged in the later 12th century in the Eifel region. It acquired the Lordship of Bedburg in 1225 and partitioned itself into Bedburg and Gladbach branches in 1366. The Bedburg branch lost sovereignty over Bedburg itself in 1384, but acquired Dyck in 1395 and Lower Salm in 1416. The Gladbach branch died out in 1426.

The Salm inheritance carried with it the rank of count, so the Reifferschiedians incorporated the name Salm into their country name (even though it lost sovereignty over Lower Salm itself to Luxemburg in 1460). In 1639, Salm-Reifferschied partitioned itself into Bedburg and Dyck lines with the latter holding sovereignty over the lordship of the same name and the former holding sovereignty over the Lordship of Reifferscheid (and administrative rights in Bedburg and Lower Salm).
