Ascanian Germany

Russian Germany

The Ascanians first emerged early in the 11th century in Ballenstedt and ruled over Anhalt until 1918. At various times, they ruled Brandenburg, Saxony, and Lüneburg, but during the period covered by this website, the only German countries they ruled outside of Anhalt were the following:

  • The Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg (until 1689, when it passed to the Guelphs).
  • The Lordship of Jever—inherited by the Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst in 1667, but not under his full control until reaching a settlement with Denmark in 1689. After the death of the last Zerbst prince in 1793, Jever passed to his closest Ascanian relative—Catherine the Great of Russia. Thereafter, Jever was ruled in personal union with Russia, so I place it in Russian Germany rather than Ascanian Germany.
  • The County of Holzappel-Schaumburg—acquired by a junior line of Anhalt-Bernburg in 1707 and surrendered to the Duchy of Nassau (a Napoleonic client state) in 1806.

I have identified no countries in Russian Germany other than Jever between 1793 and 1807 (when it was surrendered to the Kingdom Holland, a Napoleonic client state).
