Stadt and Amt Werden

Bezirk Kettwig

Werden Monastery was founded at the turn of the 9th century and a city, and later an Amt, grew up around it. Werden received city rights in 1317. The village of Kettwig arose downstream from Werden in association with a bridge over the Ruhr that was probably built in the 13th century.

In 1621, three villages were transferred to Herrschaft Hardenburg in the Duchy of Berg.
