Möllenbeck was a self-governing monastery that dates from the 9th century. Stadt Rinteln grew up to the east of the Monastery and was granted city rights in 1239. Amt Schaumburg grew up around a castle of the same name that dates from the 12th century. The Weservogtei, where the castle is located, lies north of the Weser River and mostly east of Rinteln; the Extervogtei lies south of Rinteln and the river. When the County of Schaumburg was partitioned in 1647, Stift Möllenbeck, Stadt Rinteln, the Weservogtei, and the Extervogtei were assigned to the Hessian portion (Schaumburg-Kassel), where they remained until the end of the Holy Roman Empire, when they were absorbed into the Kingdom of Westphalia (a Napoleonic client state) in 1807. After 1647, Möllenbeck constituted a “Klostergericht” (the equivalent of a Vogtei) within Amt Schaumburg.

 

In 1821, beyond the scope of this project, Schaumburg-Kassel was fully absorbed into Hesse-Kassel. At that time, Stadt Rinteln, the Extervogtei, Klostergericht Möllenbeck, most of the Weservogtei, and two villages from Vogtei Rumbeck were combined to form the judicial district (Gericht) of Rinteln. For administrative purposes, they became part of Kreis Schaumburg.
