Stadt and Herrlichkeit Krefeld
Herrlichkeit Hüls
The County/Principality of Moers consisted of several noncontiguous sections, dominated by a northern section around Moers itself and a southern section around Krefeld. The southern section included the small exclave of Hüls to the northwest of Krefeld proper.
Krefeld was founded in the 12th century and was granted city rights in 1373. The territory of the surrounding Herrlichkeit was not extensive, as it was, after 1388, completely surrounded by the Archbishopric of Cologne. As a Protestant island in the Archbishopric, Krefeld became a haven for Mennonites and Quakers.
