Oberamt Kempen-Oedt

Kempen was probably settled in the late 10th century and gained city rights in the 13th century. A castle was built there in the late 14th century, which became the seat of an Amt in the Electorate of Cologne. Ude castle was built almost 100 years earlier by a Count of Cleves, which (under the spelling “Oedt”) became the seat of an Amt that was sold to the Electorate of Cologne in 1349. The two Ämter were very small and close together, so at some point (which I assume to have been prior to 1559) they were combined into an Oberamt, which remained part of the Electorate of Cologne throughout the period covered by the database.

Adjacent to the Oberamt were two Unterherrschaften that were not part of the Amt, but were grouped with it for statistical purposes. They were administered by nobles who were subjects of the Archbishop and were considered part of the Electorate (although a portion of Hüls belonged to the County of Moers).
