Herrschaft Kniphausen

Except for the years between 1658 and 1680, “Herrshaft Kniphausen” and the “Lordship of Kniphausen” were basically the same entity—the latter a country (rendered in English, as all countries are), and the former its only subdivision (rendered in German, as all subdivisions are). Between 1658 and 1680, however, Lordship had multiple subdivisions and the Herrshaft was the subdivision covering the core territory over which the lord held long-term sovereignty (in contrast to the short-term sovereignty over Varel, Jade, and Schwei). Only during those years does the full place name of villages in the Herrschaft include a subdivision in addition to the country and nation.
