Herrschaft Broich

Broich castle was built in the late 11th century on the Ruhr in what is now the city of Mülheim. It was the seat of a nominally independent lordship south of the Ruhr, but had to share jurisdiction with the Count of Berg north of the Ruhr. In 1348, Berg’s position, relative to other territorial claimants, was strengthen by a formal alliance with Broich. By 1446, the Lord of Broich controlled both banks of the Ruhr (covering most of modern Mülheim and southern Oberhausen), but was officially subservient to Berg (by then a duchy).

 

Even as a subdivision of Berg, the Herrschaft remained hereditary and the heirs were not otherwise Berg subjects. I therefore assign Broich to countries with simplified names that reflect two entities: the sovereign (Berg) and the administrator (listed here, along with more detail on the naming convention).
