Richteramt/Herrlichkeit Weeze

Herrlichkeiten Hertefeld & Wissen

Weeze was probably founded in the 12th century. It is unclear whether it belonged to Guelders or Cleves until 1326, after which it was clearly part of Cleves. After 1473, Weeze and most of the surrounding places constituted a Richteramt under Amt Goch, but two Herrlichkeiten (one seated at Hertefeld, the other at Wissen) also existed and some sources state that little distinction was made between the Richteramt and the Herrlichkeiten. As long as Richteramt Weeze existed, I treat all places except Hertefeld and Wissen as part of it.

 

In 1649, the Richteramt was terminated and its constituent places were divided up between Hertefeld and Wissen (although I retain the Weeze name for the Herrlichkeit seated in Hertefeld). Note that in the following lists, Herrlichkeit Wissen appears only in the right column even though the Herrlichkeit existed in 1521.
