Holstein villages administered by the Hamburg Domkapitel

A number of villages under Danish or Schaumburgian sovereignty were owned and administered by the Hamburg Cathedral Chapter (Domkapitel). I divide them into two groups, based on geography and common history:

  • Gericht Barsbüttel consisted of 11 villages east of Hamburg under Danish sovereignty (simplified country name—Holstein-Hamburg). They were turned over to Amt Trittau in 1576.
  • Gericht Poppenbüttel consisted of 3 villages north and west of Hamburg under Schaumburgian sovereignty until 1640 (simplified country name—Holstein-Pinneberg-Hamburg) and Danish sovereignty (Holstein-Hamburg) thereafter. Rellingen reverted to Holstein-Pinneberg in 1563 while the other two remained under the Domkapitel’s administration until 1803.
