Stadt Oldenburg

Oldenburger Geestvogteien

Oldenburg may have been settled as early as the 7th century and its castle dates to the 12th century. A Vogtei grew up around it, but in 1345, Oldenburg was granted city rights and left the Vogtei (although it remained the Vogtei’s seat).

The other three Geestvogteien (consisting of undiked land) emerged later and had “special” status, meaning that they were not subject to any Amt. They were not, however, consistently in the same country together. Vogtei Wardenburg seems always to have been part of the County of Oldenburg. Vogtei Wüstenland was part of the County of Delmenhorst until 1577, although there is no record of it being occupied by the Bishopric of Münster as Hausvogtei Delmenhorst was. Amt Hatten, in contrast, was occupied by Mūnster until 1547, although there is no record of it ever belonging to the County of Delmenhorst.

During the local government reform instituted by Denmark in 1699, the four Vogteien were placed under Landvogtei Oldenburg. Between 1711 and 1731, the Electorate of Hannover had administrative responsibility for Hatten, Wardenburg, and Wüstenland (thereby placing them in the country of Oldenburg-Hannover).

The following lists cover the period between 1529 and 1699, but remain valid between 1699 and 1811 with the caveat that they were under Landvogtei Oldenburg during the latter period.
