Freier Grund & Hickengrund

“Freier Grund” was a condominium between the Counts/Princes of Nassau and the Counts of Sayn. It consisted of two Vogteien—Burbach and Neunkirchen. The magistrate in Burbach was appointed by a Count of Nassau and the magistrate in Neunkirchen was appointed by a Count of Sayn. The condominium persisted until the end of the Holy Roman Empire.

Hickengrund was originally a part of the County of Dillenburg, but was assigned to the Burbach Vogtei when Nassau lands were partitioned in 1607. I do not recognize it as a distinct subdivision, but you can identify its villages as those that joined Vogtei Burbach in that year. Mittelwilden and Unterwilden were split between the two Vogteien, but I place them in Burbach based on where they ended up after 1806.
