"Nebencontribuente" of the Essen Abbacy
The Essen Abbacy was sovereign over certain territory that was administered by other entities (Nebencontribuente). One of those entities, the Rellinghausen convent, was independent of Essen until 1661. Upon joining Essen, it was divided into two Herrschaften—Byfang (under private ownership) and Rellinghausen (remaining under the ownership of the eponymous convent). Stadt Steele was another such entity. The Steele Quartier, in contrast, was owned by the Essen convent. Quasi-Gericht Lipperheide lies entirely within modern Oberhausen.
