Stadt and Amt Wernigerode

Wernigerode belonged to the County of Stolberg after 1429 and, when the county was divided in 1645, the Stadt and Amt dominated one of the divisions, which was known as Stolberg-Wernigerode (although the seat was established in Ilsenburg). In 1694, the Stadt was diminished when the village of Hasserode was confiscated by the Margrave of Brandenburg.

The Count recognized Prussian sovereignty over the Amt and Stadt in 1714. In 1722, the village of Stapelburg (which had been founded by Halberstadt in 1564 and was never part of an Amt in that country) was transferred to Wernigerode.

In 1815, beyond the scope of this project, the territory of Amt Wernigerode was assigned to Kreis Osterwieck. Because of objections from the Count, a Kreis Wernigerode (including territory that had never been part of the County) was created in 1825, which persisted until World War II.
