Amt and Kreis Weferlingen

Amt Weferlingen was disconnected from the rest of the Bishopric/Principality of Halberstadt, being further north between the Bishopric/Principality of Mageburg and the Brandenburg province of Altmark. Between 1650 and 1701, administrative responsibilities for the Amt were turned over to other parties. In succession, that role was filled by the Count of Königsmark (who also administered the Swedish Duchies of Bremen and Verden out of Stade), and, in 1663, the Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg. Between 1703 and 1722, it was the responsibility of a member of the Brandenburg-Kulmbach line.

At some point after Halberstadt’s 1701 absorption into the Kingdom of Prussia (I estimate 1775), the various Ämter were organized into Kreise. Amt Weferlingen was assigned to its own Kreis, where it remain until the end of the Holy Roman Empire, when the Weferlingen area was assigned to the Kingdom of Westphalia (a Napoleonic client state).

In 1816, beyond the scope of this project, the villages in Amt Weferlingen were assigned to Kreis Gardelegen, where they remained until after World War II.
