Amt Wassenberg
The County of Wassenberg was founded in 1020 and seated in a pre-existing castle. The Wassenberg line went on to become Counts of Guelders and left Wassenberg behind to the Duchy of Limburg, under which it was demoted to a lordship. Wassenberg passed to the County/Duchy of Jülich in the early 15th century, although it spent most of that century under the administration of Moers. Jülich asserted full administrative control in 1494.
The Amt consisted of six Gerichte (one of which, Mellich, was located in what is now the Netherlands, and is excluded from the database). An adjacent hereditary Unterherrschaft, governed by local nobles instead of appointees of the Duke, was not legally part of the Amt, but was treated as such for statistical purposes.
