Amt Steinburg

Städte of Itzehoe, Krempe,

Wilster and Glückstadt

The castle that became the core of Itzehoe was built in around 1000, and Itzehoe received city rights in 1238. It temporarily served as the seat of an Amt and between 1261 and 1290, it even served as the seat of a Schaumburgian county. Wilster was founded to the west of Itzehoe in the mid-12th century and received city rights in 1282. Krempe was founded to the south of Itzehoe later than either Itzehoe or Wilster, but received city rights before Wilster in 1255.

In 1307, Steinburg castle was built to the east of Krempe. The Amt seated in Itzehoe moved there and adopted the Steinburg name. In the 1544 partition of Holstein, Amt Steinburg and the three extant Städte were assigned to the core Duchy of Holstein, where they remained until the defeat of Denmark in 1864.

Glückstadt was founded west of Krempe on the Elbe River in 1617. In 1630, Steinburg castle was destroyed and Glückstadt became the seat of the Amt (which retained the Steinburg name). In 1648, Glückstadt became the seat of the core Duchy of Holstein (and the core Duchy of Schleswig, which was also partitioned), replacing Segeberg. Eventually, the seat of the Amt moved back to Itzehoe, still retaining the Steinburg name.
