Stadt and Amt Rendsburg
Gut/Amt Hanerau
Rendsburg was originally settled in the mid-12th century on an island in the Eider River. Because the Eider served as the boundary between Schleswig and Holstein, there was some dispute over which jurisdiction it belonged to. In 1250, shortly after it was granted city rights, Rendsburg was declared to be part of Holstein (along with several surrounding villages that were unambiguously north of the Eider). Between 1290 and 1460, Rendsburg served as the seat of a Schaumburgian county, the demise of which led to the Danish takeover of all of Schaumburgian Holstein except Pinneberg. In the 1544 partition of Holstein, the Stadt and its surrounding Amt were assigned to Holstein-Hadersleben. After the Hadersleben line died, both reverted to the core Duchy in 1581, where they remained until the defeat of the Danes in 1864. In 1853, the villages in the Amt located north of the Eider were transferred to the Duchy of Schleswig.
Hanerau had the status of an Amt when it was owned by the King from the 15th century until 1525. It was then sold to its administrator and became a Gut until 1613, when it was sold back to the King. This time, however, it was absorbed into Amt Rendsburg instead of becoming its own Amt. In 1629, the King awarded it to its administrator for protecting it during a war. He separated it from Amt Rendsburg, but did not convert it back to a Gut. In 1664, it was sold again and reverted to Gut status. Finally, in 1699, it became a Kanzleigut and remained such until 1864.
