Amt Neumünster

The monastery to which the name “Neumünster” refers was established in 1127, but moved to Bordesholm in 1330. Neumünster itself remained an important market town and an Amt grew up around it. In the 1544 partition of Holstein, Neumünster was assigned to Holstein-Gottorp. It reverted to the core Duchy of Holstein in 1773, when the Gottorp line relinquished its claims in Holstein.

Although Neumünster is now a major city encompassing most of the old Amt, it did not receive city rights until 1870—beyond the scope of this project.
