Amt Montjoie

A castle was built at Montjoie, in the Eifel region, by the Dukes of Limburg in the 13th century, but it quickly became part of the Lordship of Schönau/Schönforst. It passed to the Duchy of Jülich in 1433. The Amt that grew up around the castle was never subdivided. The adjacent Herrlichkeit Hetzingen was very lightly populated and is omitted from the database. The name Montjoie was Germanized to Monschau in 1918.
