Amt Uerdingen

Uerdingen fell under the sovereignty of the Archbishop of Cologne in the 12th century. It received city rights in 1255 and again in 1284 after it was relocated to the west. It became the seat of an Amt in 1347.

 

The Archbishop of Cologne acquired sovereignty over Linn in the late 12th century. Initially, it was administered by the Lords of Linn, but responsibilities shifted to the County of Cleves in the mid-13th century. The Electorate of Cologne did not gain full administrative control until 1388, at which time it became an Amt.

 

During the time covered by the database, the Ämter of Linn and Uerdingen were governed together within the Electorate of Cologne. However, they were never formally merged and I treat them as distinct entities. Amt Linn consisted of 6½ parishes, but did not include the city in which it was seated, which remained self-governing. Amt Uerdingen, in contrast, included the city in which it was seated along with 1½ parishes. (Bockum parish was split between the two—the northern part falling in Amt Uerdingen and the southern part falling in Amt Linn.)
