Stadt & Amt Hitzacker
Located on the Elbe River, Hitzacker was already and important trading center when it was granted city rights in 1258. At that time, it was part of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg and the seat of an Amt that was assigned to the Principality of Lüneburg in 1409.
In 1591, Stadt & Amt Hitzacker were reassigned to the nonsovereign spin-off Principality of Lüneburg-Dannenburg, which had been founded in 1569. In 1598, the Stadt and Amt were placed in a secondary spin-off country (Principality of Lüneburg-Dannenburg-Hitzacker). Beginning in 1634, administrative responsibilities for the Hitzacker principality fell to Wolfenbüttel, although it remained under the sovereignty of Lüneburg. Two years later, Hitzacker reverted to the Dannenberg principality, which then became subject to Wolfenbüttel administration. In 1671, the Dannenberg principality was abolished and its constituent Ämter reverted to Lüneburg.
Amt Hitzacker was never subdivided.
