Amt Hetter

Stadt Isselburg

Herrlichkeiten Praest-Offenberg, Bienen-Hüth & Millingen

There is no city or village named “Hetter”, but there is reference to an “Amt Hetter” in the vicinity of Rees as early as 1384. (The name is derived from that of an early Germanic tribe and applies to the lowlands between Emmerich and Rees.) The Amt consisted of two Richterämter—one in Rees itself (described on a separate page) and another to the north and west of Rees, also named “Hetter”.

Isselburg, which is immediately to the south of the Lordship of Anholt, was founded around 1300 and was granted city rights in 1441. After 1482, it appears to have been the administrative seat of Richteramt Hetter, but was never itself part of the Richteramt.

During the 17th century, three Herrlichkeiten were spun off from Richteramt Hetter:

  1. Bienen-Hüth in 1645,
  2. Millingen in 1661, and
  3. Praest-Offenberg in 1678.

In 1753, the Richteramt was converted to a full-fledged Amt and was assigned to Kreis Emmerich, but by then it contained only three villages to the west of Rees. Stadt Isselburg remained separate from the Kreis.
