Territory controlled by the Lübeck Domkapitel

Territory in the Bishopric of Lübeck was controlled by three different entities:

  1. The Bishop,
  2. The Cathedral Chapter (Domkapitel), and
  3. The Eutin Collegiate Monastery (Kollegiatstift).

The territories controlled by the Domkapitel were primarily located in the southern part of the Bishopric adjacent to the city of Lübeck, although they also included some scattered villages to the west or north of the city. The territory was known simply as the “Großvogtei” and did not acquire the formal title of “Amt” until after secularization in 1803. I nevertheless refer to it as an Amt, but add an * to signal the informality of that title prior to 1803. At the time of secularization, some villages.

After secularization, villages began being shifted out of Amt Großvogtei:

  • In 1804, several villages on the eastern end of the Amt were transferred to the city of Lübeck.
  • In 1810, the village of Braak was transferred to Amt Eutin, by which it was almost surrounded.
  • In 1825, four of the northernmost outlying villages were transferred to Amt Kollegiatstift.
  • In 1843, the four remaining outlying villages were transferred to the Duchy of Holstein in exchange for the nonecclesiastical sections of villages with divided jurisdiction (identifiable below by the [ecclesiastical%] extension), one and a half villages from the former Gericht Scharbeutz, and one and a half villages from Amt Ahrensbök.

Also in 1843, Amt Großvogtei was combined with Amt Kaltenhof and some territory from Holstein to form Amt Schwartau, which thereafter consisted of the entire southern section of the Principality. (The vast majority of Amt Schwartau’s territory was occupied by France in 1806. Only the villages transferred from Holstein are recognized as part of the Amt in the database.)
