Amt Freudenberg

Freudenberg was the site of a castle that was probably built in the 14th century, long after most of the nearby villages were settled. The associated Gericht/Amt initially consisted of the parishes of Oberholzklau and Oberfischbach. Freudenberg itself did not get a parish until 1585.

When the Ottonian lands were partitioned in 1607, Amt Freudenberg was assigned to the County of Siegen. When the County of Siegen was further partitioned in 1648, the Amt was assigned to the Calvinist county governed out of Siegen’s Lower Castle.
