Stadt and Amt Dinslaken

Stadt and Amt Holten

Dinslaken was probably founded in the 12th century and was granted city rights in 1273. It became a secondary seat of the County/Duchy of Cleves and thus the seat of a Drostenamt, under which there were seven Richterämter (one of which was located in Dinslaken itself).

Holten, on the southeastern border of Richteramt Dinslaken, was probably founded in the 11th century and was granted city rights in 1310. At that time, it belonged to the County of Mark, but at some point after Mark and Cleves entered into a personal union, it was shifted to Cleves. Holten was the seat of an Amt that was not subordinate to Dinslaken, but which contained only one other village.

In 1753, Drostenamt Dinslaken was dissolved, but Richteramt Dinslaken (excluding Stadt Dinslaken) was converted into a full-fledged Amt and was assigned to the new Kreis Wesel. Amt Holten (which did not include Stadt Holten) was also assigned to Kreis Wesel.
