Kloster and Amt Cismar

The Cismar monastery (Kloster) was founded in 1245 and began acquiring land in the early 1300s. In 1544, Holstein was partitioned and the monastery was assigned the subordinate Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp (the simplified name of which, when applied to Cismar, is Holstein-Gottorp). The Duke converted the lands into an Amt and the monastery was abandoned by 1560.

In 1707, the Amt shrank upon the formation of Gut Sievershagen. In 1843, it absorbed the former Amt Kollegiatstift of the Principality of Lübeck.
