Amt Bergheim

Some kind of feudal entity was based in Bergheim as early as the 11th century. During the 13th century, it fell under the sovereignty of the County/Duchy of Jülich, where it remained until the French occupation.

The Amt contained eight Gerichte, which were administered by appointees of the Duke. In contrast, other subdivisions of the Duchy, known as Herrlichkeiten, were not legally part of the Amt, but were typically grouped with it for statistical purposes. They were administered either by local nobles or, on occasion, by foreigners. There are enough of them associated with this Amt to warrant their own page.
