Lordship of Homburg

A distinct Lordship of Homburg first arose in 1276. It was originally part of the County of Sayn, but the ruling house was split in 1294 and the territory of the Lordship was shared between the Homburg branch and the Sayn branch. In 1359, the Homburg branch died out and was replaced by the Wittgenstein branch. During that time, the boundary between Homburg and the Duchy of Berg (specifically, Amt Windeck) was highly unstable with Windeck staging frequent raids against Homburg officials. In 1604, the Wittgenstein branch asserted full control over Homburg and negotiated a fixed boundary with Berg.

The following year, the Wittgenstein lands were partitioned with Homburg assigned to the Berleburg branch. Then, in 1635, the Berleburg lands were further partitioned, with Herrschaft Homburg becoming an independent entity. That lasted until 1743, when the Homburg line died out and the Herrschaft reverted to Berleburg. The list below shows subdivisions of the independent Herrschaft, but the same subdivisions existed when Homburg was subordinate to Berleburg.
