Lordship of Anholt
The Lordship of Anholt was founded in the 12th century, but was subordinate to the Bishopric of Utrecht. By the 14th century, Anholt’s subservience to Utrecht had ended and it became a sovereign country. The Lordship passed through the hands of the Gemen and Bronkhorst families until 1512, when it was incorporated into the Duchy of Guelders. In 1540 (when the database starts), it was removed from Guelders (while still owned by the Bronkhorst family) and placed directly under the emperor. In 1645, the Lordship passed to the House of Salm and in 1688 entered into a personal union with the Principality of Salm-Kyrburg (making the simplified country name Anholt-Kyrburg).
The Lordship was not subdivided and included only the city of Anholt.
