County of Kerpen and Lommersum

Originally part of the Electorate of Cologne, the Herrschaften of Kerpen and Lommersum fell to Brabant after the 1288 Battle of Worringen. From then until 1710, they were loosely attached to the Duchy of Limburg (acquired by Brabant at the same time) with administrative responsibilities given to other entities. In 1710, sovereignty switched to the Duchy of Jülich and in 1712, they were combined and granted autonomy, while still remaining under Jülich sovereignty. In 1786, the combined entity became a sovereign County, fully independent of Jülich.
