Lordship of Ahrenthal
Lordship of Kalenborn
Ahrenthal castle was built near Sinzig in the 14th century. Together with the nearby village of Franken, it formed a lordship that was subject, in succession, to the Archbishop of Cologne, the Archbishop of Trier, and the Duke of Jülich. In 1702, it became an imperial fief (i.e., no longer under Jūlich control, but not fully independent). The noncontiguous Lordship of Kalenborn was independent until 1737, when it was purchased by the owners of Ahrenthal.
