Stadt Griethausen

Herrlichkeiten (Till-)Moyland and Husiberden

Griethausen was the site of a customs house on the lower Rhein by 1357. The settlement that built up around it was granted city rights in the 1370s. Its importance diminished in the 15th century because of a relocation of the Rhein.

 

Kleverhamm was the name of a Richteramt within Landdrostenamt Kleve that surrounded (but did not include) Griethausen and extended further east, covering most of today’s Bedburg-Hau. Adjacent to the Richteramt was Herrlichkeit Moyland, which expanded to include Till in 1662. The villages of Huisberden and Warbeyen spit off to form a Herrlichkeit in 1651, but Warbeyen reverted to Richteramt Kleverhamm in 1664.

 

In 1753, the Landdrostenamt was replaced by a much larger “Kreis” and the Richteramt was converted to a regular Amt. The two Herrlichkeiten were considered part of the Kreis, but Stadt Griethausen was not.
