The House of Nassau emerged during the 11th century and established itself as the seat of a county in 1159. The county split in two in 1255—the Ottonian line dominating the north and the Walramian line dominating the south. I make no distinction between the lines in the database, but the history is clearer when they are discussed separately, so each gets its own page.
A unified Duchy of Nassau re-emerged during the Napoleonic Wars. It was a Walramian entity even though it also included most of the German territories of the Ottonian/Orange line (that line instead becoming the royal family of the new Kingdom of the Netherlands). Neither of the countries listed below are included in the database—they are only shown to provide context for the two branches.
During the period covered by the database, there were several condominia between the two branches. Rather than assign them to one branch or the other, they are listed below.
