Condominia between Ottonian-Nassuvian and Wittgensteinian countries
Prior to 1799, the territory known as Freier Grund was a condominium between and Ottonian Nassuvian country and a Wittgensteinian country. It was broken into two Vogteien—Burbach, for which the Nassuvian country selected a judge; and Neunkirchen, for which the Wittgensteinian country appointed the judge. When constructing simplified country names, I place the country selecting the judge first and other country second (separated by a “\”). The nation assignment is that of the first-named country.
The Nassuvian country participating in the condominium was Dillenburg prior to 1607, at which time the Ottonian lands were partitioned and Beilstein was assigned the Nassuvian interest in Freier Grund. The interest reverted to Dillenburg when the Beilstein line died out, then passed to Dietz (later Orange-Nassau) when the Dillenburg line died out.
The Wittgensteinian country participating in the Freier Grund condominium was originally Sayn-Sayn. The Wittgensteinian interest later passed to Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn and Sayn-Hachenburg. In 1799, the Wittgensteinian interest was transferred to Nassau-Weilburg—a Walmerian entitiy.
