Stadt and Amt Herborn

Herborn was probably founded in the 11th century and received city rights in 1251. A Gericht/Amt had been established there by the 14th century consisting of the parishes of Herborn, Bicken, and Schönbach. (The parishes of Breitscheid, Ballersbach, and Fleisbach were carved out of Herborn later.)  When Ottonian lands were partitioned in 1607, Amt Herborn was assigned to the County of Dillenburg and remained part of that county/Landesteil through 1806. However, the village of Donsbach moved to Amt Dillenburg in 1630.
